About Our Sun

About Us

Our Sun Montessori is a place where we aim to build an eco-friendly early childhood education (ECE) center to support specific genders and identities of all scholars, and their families and their families, serving children ages 3 to 6 years. In addition to providing an authentic Montessori education, our school is dedicated to being an institute for BIPOC educators and a community hub that offers wrap-around support to families. As a liaison between families and resources, we ensure that each family has access to the support they need to thrive.

Our education method

This scooprovides an equitable, authentic Montessori education grounded in Afro-centric, and culturally sustaining pedagogy. We envision a learning community where children are empowered to author their own life journeys, and we prioritize their emotional, mental, and physical well-being.

At Our Sun Montessori, joy, empowerment, humanity, interconnectedness, balance, and harmony are at the core of daily learning experiences.

The Montessori approach is a child-centered, hands-on-learning pedagogy rooted in peace education and global mindedness. Dr. Maria Montessori's holistic approach helps children become truly capable and productive individuals by focusing on their moral, behavioral, emotional, and intellectual development.

We are proud members of the Wildflower Network of schools, an ecosystem of decentralized Montessori micro-schools that support children, teachers, and parents. Wildflower aspires to give all children and families the opportunity to choose high-quality, beautiful learning environments as they follow life’s unfolding journey.

A Cooperative School Community

At Our Sun  Montessori, we believe in engaging all stakeholders—including caregivers, teachers, and students—in sharing responsibility for running the school. Strong, positive school-family relationships are the foundation of effective education. We recognize that caregiver involvement is not just about volunteering or attending events but about fostering a healthy caregiver-child relationship that extends the values of our school family into the home.

Our Values Proposition at Our Sun Montessori

  • Gender, Identity, culturally Affirming

  • Empowerment and Capability: We believe students and families are inherently capable and motivated to learn and grow. Our role is to empower them by providing access to meaningful opportunities and purposeful work.

  • Creating Conducive Environments: We are dedicated to creating environments that support learning, skill-building, and community engagement. We ensure that students and families have the tools and resources they need to succeed independently.

  • Navigating and Closing Gaps: We work to identify and address any barriers that hinder success. Our commitment is to close gaps and ensure that all students and families have equal access to opportunities and support.

  • Diverse and Independent Interventions: Our approach offers a variety of interventions tailored to the needs and interests of students and families. It is grounded in ethics, education, and the goal of fostering independence.

  • Limitless Potential: We believe in the limitless potential of every individual. Our aim is to avoid limitations through standardization or prediction, embracing the unique paths that each child and family might take in their learning journey.

Our Teacher Leaders

Micah and Isaiah met at the Surge Institute, a leadership accelerator program focused on empowering educators of color. During their time at Surge, they collaborated on a "freedom dream" project, sharing a common vision for transforming education. Their shared passion for creating an inclusive and innovative learning environment led to the founding of Our Sun Montessori School.

Micah's journey into education was fueled by a deep commitment to social justice and a passion for working with young children. With a background in charter schools, Micah found the traditional system too rigid and sought to create a more flexible and nurturing educational environment.

Isaiah's path to becoming a educator was inspired by a desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and their families. Like Micah, Isaiah's experience in the charter world highlighted the need for a more holistic approach to education, one that values the whole child and their community.
