  • Our Story | Our Sun Montessori

Learn more about Our Sun Montessori and its origins, what makes us the ideal place for your children and how the teachers folded the way of education. Teacher Leader Story A Freedom Dream Realized Micah's dream started at Lincoln University (first Degree granting HBCU) and grew at the Surge Institute, a leadership accelerator dedicated to empowering educators of color. During his time at Surge, he collaborated on a visionary project called their "freedom dream," driven by his passion for transforming education. He, imagined creating a space that was both gender specific, inclusive, and innovative, where all students—especially Black and Brown children—could thrive. This vision inspired the founding of Our Sun Montessori School, a place where the dream would become reality. As the first Black co-freedom dream leader to collaborate on a project through Surge, Micah and his partner achieved what no others had done before, making their dream a reality in just one year. The commitment to building an educational space continues and is rooted in equity and empowerment continues to inspire the future of Our Sun Montessori. Micah's Background Micah's journey into education was fueled by a deep commitment to social justice, mentorship, and a passion for working with young children. With a background in Early Childhood Education, Primary, Secondary, college age scholars, and educational non-profit leadership Micah found the traditional system too rigid and sought to create a more flexible and nurturing educational environment. Vision of Our School Our Sun Montessori School aims to be a place that is brave, healthy, and safe, providing trauma-informed care and full wrap-around supports. We are dedicated to offering comprehensive services, including workforce development for families and teacher pipeline programs, to build a robust educational and professional community. Inspiration and Vision Micah was drawn to the Wildflower School model because of its hands-on approach, emphasis on primary education, and accessibility. He appreciated the model's flexibility and the freedom it offers educators and students. The foundation of Montessori principles, combined with a deep connection to African culture, resonated with their vision of creating a truly inclusive and empowering educational environment. The idea of providing true options and fostering an environment where children can thrive excited them. Coming from the charter world, they found the rigidity limiting and saw the Wildflower model as a way to offer a more dynamic and responsive educational experience. Long-term Goals and Vision Initial Program: Our Sun Montessori will begin with a program for children aged 3-6. Over time, they plan to expand to include a toddler program and an elementary program. Additionally, they aim to offer wrap-around services to support the whole family, recognizing the importance of a holistic approach to education. Scaling the Model: Their long-term vision includes scaling the model to reach multiple communities in need of similar educational opportunities. Building a teacher/leader pipeline for black/BIPOC educators by becoming a Montessori Certification site and implementing a Montessori teacher/leader Fellow. The fellowship would train practitioners in Montessori education towards their certification through a cultural responsive lense, support classroom instruction implementation, and leadership development to open their own charter. We are committed to not only giving back to our own community but also extending impact to other communities through high quality learning institutions. Anticipated Challenges and Solutions Fundraising: Fundraising is a significant challenge, but Micah is committed to learning and navigating the process to secure the necessary resources. Community Engagement: Educating community members and parents about school choice and Montessori education for liberation is another challenge. They plan to address this by emphasizing the value of holistic education and demonstrating that success is not solely measured by test scores, but by the overall well-being and development of the child and family. They will draw on their experiences with organizations like the Department of Environmental Justice, City Council, School District, Local CDC, local providers, religious groups, and other trusted community organizations to build a supportive and understanding community. Our Sun Montessori School Stands as a beacon of hope and innovation in Greater Philaelphia, aiming to provide high-quality, inclusive education while fostering a supportive community environment. Micah and Isaiah's journey from the Surge Institute to founding this school exemplifies their commitment to transforming education for the betterment of all.

  • Why Montessori? | Our Sun Montessori

The Montessori method can be the ideal way for child education, discover how Our Sun Montessori in Philadelphia implements it and how to apply to the school. Why Montessori? At Our Sun Montessori, we believe in the transformative power of Montessori education. Dr. Maria Montessori's Method, founded over a century ago, is not just an educational approach—it’s a research-based, time-tested philosophy that honors the unique development of every child. Supported by modern research and the latest neuroscience, Montessori education continues to withstand the test of time and scientific scrutiny, providing a nurturing environment that fosters independent learning, creativity, and self-discipline. In our Montessori classrooms, we embrace multi-age groupings—a core element of Montessori education. This model creates a "practice society" where children of different ages learn from each other, develop leadership skills, and cultivate empathy. The youngest children learn from older peers, while older children reinforce their own understanding by mentoring younger ones. This cycle of learning fosters a collaborative community, where every child is both a learner and a teacher, a vital component in building social and emotional intelligence. Moreover, Montessori education offers depth and context that is often missing in traditional, standards-based curricula. Our "spiral curriculum" introduces concepts to children at a young age, then revisits and deepens them as they grow, ensuring that learning is interconnected and meaningful. This approach encourages long-term retention and a deeper understanding of complex ideas. At Our Sun Montessori, individualized academics are at the heart of what we do. Each child follows their unique academic path with lessons tailored to their strengths, challenges, and interests. By allowing children to excel in areas where they are passionate, while providing extra support where needed, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Montessori teachers observe and guide students with precision, offering lessons that are perfectly suited to each child’s personal journey. Why Wildflower? Our Sun Montessori chose the Wildflower School model because it aligns deeply with our vision of creating a community-centered, inclusive, and child-centric learning environment. Wildflower schools are designed to be small, independent, and community-based, which mirrors our mission of creating spaces where Black and Brown students are not only educated but empowered. Our partnership with Wildflower allows us to combine the best of Montessori’s educational philosophy with a focus on equity and cultural relevance. We are building a school where students’ identities are honored, their voices are heard, and their natural curiosity is encouraged. The Wildflower network offers us the tools and support to nurture not only students but families and educators as well. We chose Wildflower because it gives us the freedom to create a holistic model that caters specifically to the needs of our community. With an emphasis on restorative practices, African-centered education, and strong family partnerships, Wildflower allows us to take an innovative approach that reflects our community’s values and history. The micro-school model ensures that children receive personalized attention in an intimate environment, enabling deeper connections and more meaningful learning experiences. At Our Sun Montessori, we see our role not just as educators but as partners in the growth of our community. Through our Montessori approach, Wildflower partnership, and commitment to providing individualized and culturally responsive education, we are creating a space where Black and Brown boys and girls can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This is more than just a school—it is a place where children and families grow together, where learning is an adventure, and where our community’s future leaders are nurtured and celebrated.

  • Our Principles | Our Sun Montessori

Discover the values and philosophy of Our Sun Montessori in Philadelphia. Learn how our Montessori network supports a holistic approach to education. Our Principles Network Advancing an ecosystem of independent schools We seek to make Wildflower schools an option for children and families everywhere. As we grow, we benefit from an expanding community of learners and professionals working together, and the economic efficiencies that can arise from sharing resources. At the same time, we protect the autonomy of every teacher-leader and we resist the expansion of central-administration and authority. Each school sees itself as a node in a network, with substantial freedom in school-level decision-making and access to the resources of the network when those resources are useful and compelling to the school. Reciprocally, each school also sees itself as accountable to its neighbor schools and the broader Wildflower community, and responsible for supporting existing and future Wildflower schools. Finally, wherever possible, we make our materials, software and learnings available publicly, so that all schools can benefit from them, whether or not they are affiliated with Wildflower. Innovation A Laboratory for Innovation Wildflower schools are committed to providing authentic Montessori environments for our students and at the same time keeping Dr. Montessori’s commitment to scientific pedagogy alive. In our work to continuously improve, we try new things, rigorously evaluate our efforts, learn from colleagues within and outside of Wildflower, and make adjustments as necessary. Because scientific observation is the foundation of the Montessori method, we seek to use modern technologies to extend and expand our teachers’ capacity for observation and documentation – without changing the concrete, experiential nature of the prepared environment. Home A Seamless Learning Community Wildflower schools look for ways in which children’s home, school, and community environments can offer more seamless experiences, reflecting consistent perspectives on children’s development and engaging them as authentic contributors in each setting. We see our work as a partnership with parents and families: we value their wisdom, invite their engagement, and enthusiastically share with them our Montessori methods. Similarly, parents at Wildflower schools see their roles as active supporters of the schools and teacher-leaders, rather than its customers. Equity A Commitment to Equity Wildflower schools exist within the context of the segregation and inequity of our communities and society, and where there is no justice, there can be no lasting peace. As Montessorians, we believe children’s unique capacity to adapt to their environment makes childhood the key to the long-term improvement of society and our greatest hope for a more peaceful world. We cultivate that capacity in schools that include people of different racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds and seek out ways to make our schools more accessible to all families; we celebrate diversity and foster inclusivity; and, we consider the unique opportunities and challenges facing every child and commit to giving each student what they need to find their purpose and fulfill their potential. We recognize the significance of this undertaking, and we work to transform ourselves, our school communities and our broader society to bring about our vision for justice and peace. Beauty Cultivating a deep beauty in all things Dr. Montessori wrote that schools should be aesthetically engulfing and culturally enriching for children. Wildflower schools live into this through the choices we make about materials and fine art, interior designs that burst with beauty and communicate to children, teachers and families that they are valued, and by welcoming working artists as a part of the prepared environment. All of us – adults and children – explore and cultivate the beauty of our inner landscapes through mindfulness practices, and seek to carry that beauty into our relationships with each other. Nature Emphasizing the nonseparation between nature and humans At Wildflower schools, we cultivate each child’s direct relationship with the natural world, by attending to and going out into the nature that surrounds us and by bringing abundant plant life into our schools so that children learn to care for their living environment. We limit each school’s physical footprint and minimize its impact on the environment, including through the choice of sustainable, nontoxic and earth-friendly materials whenever possible. We maintain nutritional standards that are earth-conscious and protect natural, healthful diets for children. Montessori An Authentic Montessori Environment The Montessori Method emerges from the belief that children are naturally good, peaceful and curious and that in the context of a supportive environment, all children engage instinctively in the work of self-construction. With appropriate freedoms and the right support, children follow their interests to create rich learning experiences, form peaceful communities, and support and learn from one another. We are dedicated to the preparation of environments and ourselves to support the development of children. Teacher-Led Small and Non-hierarchical Wildflower schools are 1-2 room schools with the faculty both teaching and administering the school. Wildflower teachers-leaders are partners and social entrepreneurs, responsible primarily to themselves and each other for every aspect of their school and its overall success. By preserving a small scale, teacher-leaders are able to make day-to-day decisions that respond to the needs of the children and school-wide decisions that express their own vision in the context of the needs of children, families and themselves. Shopfront Neighborhood-nested in partnership with the community Wildflower schools sit in street-facing and accessible, light-filled spaces on walkable streets and invite community members visually into the daily work of children. They increase the presence of children and families in the community, as more narrow geographic focus supports walking to and from school, and by relying on public playgrounds, gardens and other civic spaces that would otherwise be on-site in larger institutions. We expand our definition of “stakeholders” beyond the families we serve directly, and we work to make our surrounding communities stronger and healthier for children.
